The design of the offices of the Composers and Musicians Union of Romania (UCMR-ADA) was based on a flexible interior and distinctive exterior.  The floorplate of the building was kept small to ensure natural daylight would penetrate the full floor. The exterior works in conjunction with this and directs the light into the space where it is most needed.

The fins on the front and rear facade are designed to maximize the amount of light that enters the buildings.  They are  oriented based on daylight studies and their form is parametrically controlled based on the plan and these studies.  These fins give the building a distinctive character and are an homage to the strings and hammers that are inside a piano.  By bringing these usually hidden elements to the outside of the building we are also trying to make the public aware of the work being done by the union on behalf of the composers and musicians that create the beautiful music that is heard by concert goers across the country.
