Our project approaches the question of play from how the choreography of the square can provide opportunities that are not immediately apparent. We propose four large catalysts and twenty to thirty smaller “dancers”. The catalysts act as icons and beacons in the square, referring as well to the totems at the entry and fountain. The positioning of the catalyst is flexible and can be adjusted based on any event or need that the city has. The dancers are smaller and can be moved by people that use the square to sit and have lunch or rearranged as part of a game or obstacle course by children and their parents.
Together they act as a semi-choreographed dance through the square. But our goal is that this works at the scale of the people using the square as well. We envision the entire installation (catalysts and dancers) as a larger catalyst for the city, with the people as the dancers.
