SHENZHEN RIVER BORDER CROSSING

YEAR: 2011
TYPE: Government Facility
PHASE: Competition
SIZE: 20 hectares
TEAM: at MRA

The overall design is based on efficiency and elegance. The symmetry in both the circulation and structural diagrams creates a dynamic relationship that guides passengers. The ramps use the shape of the structural ovals to give continuous support along their edges. The office blocks create both a spatial and structural anchor for the walkways. As the paths approach the river and the office blocks end, the bridge opens up completely to give unobstructed views of the river. This creates a singular moment when the oval becomes horizontal and the paths meet at the same elevation.

The architectural ensemble creates broad gestures that are combined with specific architectural moments that emerge as a fluid experience. The main motifs of the oval and the patterned surface are repeated at different scales and throughout the site to bring together the various programs and spaces. While the main building is an active part of the broader infrastructural field, the individual objects work as moments of pause within the rapid pace of the border crossing. Efficiency is combined with elegance to create a dynamic whole.
