With Ben(t)ch the common becomes unique.  We took traditional bench slats and manipulated them into a more dynamic form, creating an engaging structure where people could stop, sit, relax, and play games. The bench fluidly transforms from seat to lounge to table.

Our approach led to some unique challenges. Shortly after we started design, prototypes were made to help us understand how to resolve issues of durability, fabrication, and budget. While testing different materials, including fiberglass, hardwoods and plywoods, we landed on the boat building material, Lauan. It provided an inexpensive solution that could easily be manipulated using steam bending, while the lamination process gives it the strength to be a piece of public furniture. A clear epoxy finish will provide protection from the weather while maintaining the natural look and feel of wood.

Ben(t)ch combines traditional and new fabrication techniques to make a fluid form work in a durable, affordable, and beautiful design.
