Smorg Fence was a design charrette that took place at the Children’s Museum of the Arts, the offices of A+I and culminated with the installation on-site at 76 Varick Street.  It was an important priority of all involved in this project to garner community involvement and input to contribute to Smorg Square and further, to use this as an opportunity to open a dialogue about open space in New York City.

.

Using Grasshopper software,  the students designed a supergraphic of ribbons which was woven into the exterior fence of the site and remains a permanent fixture at the entrance of “Smorg Square”. The students learned to evolve a highly tuned branding packaged design by A+I into a physical manifestation of their own design. The students went through a full design/build process.  Themes of the workshop were centered around pattern making and graphic design concepts including movement, opacity, gradients, and weaving.
